Wise words, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Work-wise, I’ve been recording some drums with this man: http://vimeo.com/16843331 (this video was made during a magical day recording in the barn back in late 2009, produced & mixed by yours truly….). Also, been tweaking a new Boxes arrangement, remixing Underworld tracks and writing some instrumental stuff for Audio Network. Also going to the 1st screening of “The Rabbit Hole” on Thursday night.

It’s been so much fun working with Carey on the Boxes tracks. Can’t wait to finish off the last few mixes for the album. The video for “Silent Alarm” is well worth watching with a cunning twist at the end – be aware that it carries an 15 rating though! Watch it here: http://www.vimeo.com/28401403

The previous video for “Throw Your Stones” is also fantastic: http://www.vimeo.com/24770174

So many possible projects coming up, it’s daunting – how am I going to fit them all in? In the meantime, mixing a single for N-Dubz stable mates Encore….. starting to sound like a hit! Visited Edinburgh at the end of the week to deliver Jewel & Esk College’s Golden Reel award to Donald Bell (who I chose as the winner a few weeks back). I also delivered a couple of “master classes” – just me chatting about how I produce/mix tracks with a few anecdotes thrown in, truth be told, but I hope the students were inspired….. Thanks Jon Buglass for your hospitality!

It’s a 25 minute psychological thriller written and directed by Andrew Weston and Alex Peschak, with music by Chris Weston. I’ve mixed music for several adverts before but a film is quite another proposition, what with all the sound effects and dialogue to deal with. Quite a challenge but I’m really excited about it.

Mixed at the now closed Eden Studios in 2005 “Birds” is Bic’s third studio album. All three have been extremely successful in her native New Zealand with “Birds” going three times platinum. The album was quite challenging to mix for a couple of reasons. First, it had been recorded live in a large house without the usual studio separation and just a few overdubs. Second, Bic really wanted the album to have a “vintage” feel to it but still to stand up on the radio. I found that I had to do a delicate balancing act between ambience and clarity, quite a different approach from most pop mixes which emphasise punch and dryness. I think it turned out really well, sounding timeless but modern.

Brighton based Chungking were introduced to me in 2006 by Matt at CEC Management. They had some really good quality “home” recordings that needed some additional production and a mix. They farmed the tracks for the “Stay Up Forever” album (released 2007) out to a number of producers and I chose “Baby” to work on in Hub (basically my Logic based home studio in the garage). Sean and Jessie came up to my place to add some overdubs and I added some drum programming and keyboard parts. I’m particularly proud of the mix of “Baby” because I had to do it on my limited set-up, something I wasn’t used to doing, and it helped to give me the inspiration for a high quality version of Hub, which saw fruition soon after in Hub II.

Since mixing half of Mumiy Troll’s double album “8” in 2008 I’ve had an on-going working relationship with Ilya, the band’s singer and writer. Ilya’s very modern approach to the music business means that I’m regularly getting requests from him to produce, mix, even sing on tracks that he uploads to me from wherever he is in the world at that moment! Paradise is a case in point – it’s an English version of one of MT’s older songs and Ilya asked me to “modernise” it and mix, even encouraging me to sing the chorus backing vocals and “Russian Choir” in the mid section (all of which was done at Hub II). We’re both really happy with the result and the track was released on a US EP in 2009 accompanied by a brilliantly quirky MT video (see link below).

Nick Worthington from 679 asked me to work on this track in 2009 which started out as a fairly basic recording. It was intended to go on the “Illuminations” EP – five tracks designed to introduce Little Boots to America. I knew that I’d have to do something that would match up to the quality of the other, already finished and released in the UK, tracks on the EP like “New In Town”. After a weekend in Hub II with my head buried in Logic programming new parts and sounds, the early summer sun streaming through the blinds, I delivered the mix on Monday morning with bleary eyes! As my track was the last to go on to the EP it came out within a couple of weeks of me finishing – nice to have such a fast turnaround! Sometimes I find myself telling friends what I’m working on and then the finished thing doesn’t appear for ages so it’s great when something gets released quickly.
