Bogdana Chivas – “Great Life”
In 2010 I produced and mixed French/Bulgarian artist Bogdana’s forthcoming album at High Barn and Hub II. She approached me via my management and played me an album’s worth of previously recorded material. We decided that the best approach was to put together a small band and re-record the bulk of the songs. After two fast and furious tracking sessions at High Barn with Robin Guy (drums), Svetlana Vassileva (bass) and Bogdana (guitar) we had the rhythm tracks for two thirds of the album (I used some of her Paris sessions as the basis for the other tracks). We decamped to Hub II (not difficult as it’s yards away from High Barn!) to overdub guitars and vocals (Bogdana) and keyboards/percussion (me). Mixing the tracks was pretty straightforward as I’d been working on the balances all the way through the production process. In fact the only tricky thing was matching some of the Paris recordings to the new stuff – I ended up sending the very dry Paris drums out through the High Barn PA system and recording the ambience which worked a treat!
